Parenting is so challenging as there are a lot of dilemmas that are not answered. Parents don’t know whether need to give more or less of something. One of the main concerns is television. Should parents allow their children to have more screen time or less? Do you know that watching televisions can benefit your children? Here’s a list of the advantages of a television for children.
The first advantage of allowing your children watching television is children will get more opportunities in learning, of course when parents pick the appropriate channels for the children. Especially for toddlers, television is the second medium for them to pick and learn new language, for instance English or Mandarin.
When exposing little children to television at young ages to watch educational channels, they will unconsciously pick the language and master it. So, if you want your children to speak fluent English, maybe it’s time for you to allow them to watch educational channels such as Baby TV and TV Pendidikan.

By allowing your children to watch television, you are promoting interactive learning too! There are a lot of cartoons that promote interactive learning such as Dora the Explorer and Blue’s Clues. Why should your children learn with cartoons? There are several reasons why and some of them are:
- Cartoons use simple word and language that children can apply in their daily lives
- Cartoons enunciate the words clearly and repeat the a few times which help the children to repeat after the cartoon
- Cartoons are short! This is a great news because children do not have longer attention span, so this explains why 30 minutes cartoon is cut into 15 minutes-show.
- Another fun way of learning!
Through television, parents are giving wide exposure to their children about the world, about the different culture and places specifically. This will allow the children to have a great knowledge on what is happening globally and an awareness that there are other people beyond the world that they can see.
The children will understand about global issues. When you train your children to get updated with current news, they will be more aware of the situation around the world and will try to get more information on something. For example, if the news about Krakatoa volcano erupted is showed on television, you can prompt your children to know more about the first volcano eruption in 1883 and what were the impacts towards people living in that area.

Lastly, watching television allows you to bond with your children. Make Saturday night as your movie night and enjoy appropriate movies with your children.
Lives will get busier and children will grow without parents noticing it, so this activity will allow your children to have a sweet childhood memories with you and they might continue this tradition when they have their own children in the future.
